I think earlier writers like Debord and Baudrillard had far more substantial insights (which perhaps Hedges draws on to some extent). And Morris Berman and Jane Jacobs have also come out with similar books in the last few years ("Dark Ages America" and "Dark Age Ahead," respectively). If I had to recommend a single writer writing on the lines of manufactured reality, it would be Jean Baudrillard.
